Why David C. Humphreys
Is The Expert

David C. Humphreys is the President and Chief Executive Officer of TAMKO Building Products LLC, one of the nation's largest independent manufacturers of residential roofing shingles. A third-generation leader of the family-owned company founded by his grandfather E.L. Craig in 1944, David has guided TAMKO's growth and modernization for more than three decades — transforming it from a regional manufacturer into a national powerhouse serving all 50 states. David did not initially plan to join the family business. After earning a B.A. in English from the University of the South, a J.D. from the University of Miami School of Law, and an LL.M. in Taxation from New York University, he built a distinguished legal career — first as a defense attorney in Joplin, Missouri, then as a corporate tax attorney at the prestigious Davis Polk & Wardwell in New York and Paris, where he specialized in complex cross-border tax transactions. In 1989, David's father Jay Humphreys invited him to return home and join TAMKO as General Counsel and Vice President of Finance, Manufacturing and Legal. When Jay passed away unexpectedly in 1993, David stepped into the role of CEO at a pivotal moment for the company. Under his leadership since 1994, TAMKO has expanded dramatically — modernizing manufacturing plants through automation, pursuing vertical integration of raw material supply, and growing to operate manufacturing and warehouse facilities across seven states with products reaching customers nationwide. Beyond the boardroom, David is a deeply committed philanthropist and civic leader. He and his wife Debra co-founded the Thomas Jefferson Independent Day School in Joplin in 1993, contributing a $15 million pledge to reduce tuition and expand educational access. They established the Humphreys Scholars Excellence Award at Missouri Southern State University with over $2 million in scholarship funding, benefiting more than 100 students. When an EF5 tornado devastated Joplin in 2011, TAMKO donated $1 million to the Red Cross and David and Debra personally contributed $1 million to the Salvation Army and school rebuilding efforts — even helping search for victims and housing displaced families. David serves on the Board of Directors of the Cato Institute, as Chairman of the Acton Institute for the Study of Religion & Liberty, and as Executive Committee Chairman of the Institute for Humane Studies. He has endowed a chair in criminal justice at the University of Miami School of Law and served as Chair of the Board of Regents for the University of the South. His leadership philosophy is rooted in free-market principles, continuous improvement through the Deming Cycle, and a commitment to stewardship that honors the legacy built by three generations of his family.
