Steve
Spence

Managing Director & Co-Owner, Project Map It

I went from a 20-year career as a Special Educator making $90,000 a year to making $37,000 my first year at Project Map It. There were five or six times we almost shut it down. But I believed in what we were building — a tool that lets contractors show real work in real neighborhoods and build the trust that wins jobs.

Why Steve Spence
Is The Expert

Steve Spence is the Managing Director and Co-Owner of Project Map It (PMI), an innovative SaaS platform that helps roofing, remodeling, and home service contractors build credibility, showcase their work, and close more deals. Ranked #9 Preferred Partner in the 2026 Power100 rankings, Project Map It has scaled to serve over 1,000 contractors nationwide with its interactive mapping, review collection, and sales enablement tools. Project Map It enables contractors to create dynamic visual portfolios of their completed projects on an interactive map, collect and display customer reviews, and leverage that social proof directly in the sales process. When a contractor visits a potential customer, they can pull up jobs completed right around the corner — with photos, reviews, and project details — making the sales conversation smoother and more credible. The platform can appear on a unique Project Map It URL and as an embedded widget on contractors' corporate websites, giving sales teams a compelling tool to differentiate themselves from competitors. Steve's journey to leading a technology company is one of the most unique in the home improvement industry. Before co-founding PMI, he spent nearly 20 years as a Special Educator in Anne Arundel County Public Schools, where he developed a deep passion for leadership, teamwork, and empowering others to succeed. He retired from teaching in 2020 to join Project Map It full-time and spent the first two to three years growing the company largely on his own, learning the home improvement industry from the ground up. That educator's mindset — transparency, collaboration, and a commitment to helping people succeed — continues to define how he leads PMI today. Beyond business, Steve has coached lacrosse for over 25 years, mentoring players of all ages and earning recognition as a three-time CAC All-Conference selection, team MVP, and two-year captain during his playing days at St. Mary's College of Maryland. He also holds a Master of Education from McDaniel College (formerly Western Maryland College). Steve is deeply involved in community service, helping expand Roofers in Recovery's impact by organizing charity golf tournaments that grew from one PMI-hosted event raising $2,000 to four nationwide tournaments raising over $30,000 in 2024. He was recognized as a Partner Advocate for leadership in raising awareness around mental health and addiction recovery in the roofing industry. Steve is a Greg Cummings mutual connection on LinkedIn, a published author, and a featured guest on Greg Cummings' PowerChat podcast where he discussed Project Map It's growth and vision. He is based in Arnold, Maryland.
